alve
A Signifier
alve seduces you into watching rather than simply looking. Is what you see an empty space, or the bonds that define its limits? The answer keeps shifting, and with it, so does alve's meaning. Designed by Nilüfer Kozikoğlu, alve is a form woven from bridges that bind and wrap the void, an abstract solid defined by the tension between its cellular walls. It sparks curiosity instinctively, and "How peculiar!" is never far from the lips of anyone who encounters it.

The object grew out of Kozikoğlu's Alve0sis research, taking its name from "alveolar" in its cellular sense. Each piece is handcrafted using a polyester fiber coating over a cementitious mixture on an inflatable mold, finished with acrylic paint. The nature of the concrete means that slight surface bubbling and color shading are inherent to each piece, making every alve one of a kind.
alve comes in two characters that are the opposite of one another. alve Plump takes its fullness from the way the cementitious mixture is left to solidify over water inside the inflatable mold, producing a generous, rounded curve. alve Slim is its lean counterpart, taut and spare. Together they offer two very different readings of the same idea: the space, and what surrounds it. alve has been exhibited at PG Art Gallery in 2015, Superstudio Più Super Design Discovering Talents in 2017, and Collectible Design at ECNP Galeri in 2017.
